Shaolin Temple USA Hosted
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Event
Theme:  “Love, Peace, Health, Unity”

The month of May was designated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month by the U.S. Congress. On May 15, 2022, Shaolin Temple USA hosted a celebration event at its Shaolin Culture Center in the Silicon Valley city of Fremont, to honor and share the rich, colorful and distinctive multicultural heritage of the Asians and Pacific Islanders, in the form of cultural performances, exhibitions, audience participation and interactive experiences.

Mayor Lily Mei and Councilmember Yang Shao of Fremont, former California Assemblymember Kansen Chu, Union City Councilmember Gary Singh, and representatives of community groups attended the celebration to express their support.

Mayor Mei presented a Certificate of Recognition to Master Yanran,
Executive Director of Shaolin Temple USA.

Residents from the greater San Francisco Bay Area brought their families and partook in the festivity, many of them dressed in traditional ethnic attire, painting a colorful and happy portrait of this auspicious occasion.

In his opening speech, Master Yanran introduced the origin of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and his vision for the commemoration:

It's my great pleasure to host the Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration in San Francisco bay area, to honor and foster these magnificent traditional cultures in America. The month of May was chosen to commemorate two milestones in Asian American and Pacific Islanders history: the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the building of the transcontinental railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. The majority of the transcontinental railroad workers were Chinese immigrants.

As we celebrate this Heritage Month in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America's history, we also want to take this opportunity to emphasize our theme and goal for this celebration:Love, Peace, Health, and Unity.

With deep compassion, peace and equality in mind, without discrimination, we hope to achieve respect and tolerance for the cultural traditions of all ethnic groups in the development of a diverse country as America.

Our hope is all mankind united, working diligently to contribute to society, taking responsibility to protect our health and natural resources for our future generations.

Let us all work together, and look forward to a more harmonious and healthy world in the future.

In line with the event's theme, to encourage community participation and unity, Shaolin Temple USA invited local arts groups and cross generation talents to showcase their unique cultural heritage that make up the rich cultural fabric of our community, such as the Chinese waist drum troupe, traditional orchestra and choir, Indian dance troupe, Vietnamese & Filipino singers, Guzheng soloist, face changing performer, Hanfu (traditional Chinese attire) fashion show, etc. As the event host, Shaolin Temple USA presented a fabulous collection of Chinese cultural treasures — Shaolin Kung Fu, Cantonese Lion Dance, Wellness Qigong, and a traditional Chinese Medicine free clinic. On site were also food booths, Indian henna hand painting artists, traditional handicrafts, Alphabots interactive center, and art exhibition charity sale.

For the past 15 years, in the Shaolin spirit of "compassion, wisdom, peace and harmony," Shaolin Temple USA has been sharing Shaolin culture in the United States through its Culture Centers on both coasts of the country. People embrace Shaolin culture as an important part of the community. This event brought together people of all ages from diverse backgrounds. A large group of volunteers worked together to make the event a great success in promoting diversity in community culture, community spirit, and social harmony!
