Shaolin Temple USA's 50-member "Shaolin Damo Straight Sword" parade team led by Executive Director Master Yanran won the "Specialty Units" Top Award in this year's San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade. On April 26, Executive Director Master Yanran and parade team representatives accepted the award from parade organizer San Francisco Chinese Chamber of Commerce at its annual spring banquet. This is the 8th time that Shaolin Temple USA has won an award for outstanding performance in the parade.

Celebrating its 159th year, the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade is ranked one of the world's top ten parades. Every year, over 150 United States and international teams participated in the parade by invitation, showcasing a rich array of Chinese folk cultural traditions in performances, gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions and spectacular dragons. Crowds, some as many as ten deep, line the 15-block parade route from San Francisco downtown to Chinatown to be part of the festivity. Through KTVU Fox-2 and San Francisco KTSF-26 TV stations and live streams on multiple websites, the parade celebrates the Lunar New Year with millions of viewers worldwide. This is the 7th year that Shaolin Temple USA has won an award for excellence in performance in the parade, and the 10th consecutive year that the Shifus and students from San Francisco, Fremont, Silicon Valley Culture Centers and Stanford University participated in this cultural extravaganza. Intrigued by "Shaolin Damo Straight Sword," and gravity-defying Kung Fu, parade organizer and TV stations requested more in-depth information to enrich the live telecast. "I heard you have a real cool act this year!" said KTVU Fox-2 producer Amber Lee, who interviewed and filmed the students and Shifus rehearsing for the parade at Shaolin Temple USA Culture Center in San Francisco, and produced a feature story entitled "Preps for Parade Underway" to promote the upcoming event. On February 23, the day of the parade, when team Shaolin Temple USA showcased Shaolin Damo Straight Sword's fluid, intricate, precise, versatile and forceful swordplay, along with the Shifus' display of breathtaking Shaolin fist forms, traditional weapons, airborne leaps and jaw-dropping kicks, the audience was mesmerized, rewarding the team with non-stop applause and cheers.

As one of the grand finale teams, Shaolin Damo Sword team took the parade to climax throughout the parade route.

KTVU FOX-2 parade telecast anchor Ben Fong-Torres exclaimed that it is unbelievable that high energy Kung Fu originated from the same place as Zen Buddhism.

KTSF-26 anchors introduced Shaolin Kung Fu in Mandarin and Cantonese dialects. "What differentiates Shaolin Kung Fu from other martial arts is the Union of Chan (Zen) and Kung Fu. Train in Kung Fu to strengthen the body; practice Chan to cultivate the mind. Shaolin Kung Fu is a form of Buddhist cultivation."
