Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco
Shaolin Temple USA Warrior Monks and students participated in the parade
with an exciting, all new program in each of the past 3 years. Our team was awarded 2nd place in the Community Organizations category in 2011 and 1st place in the Special Units category in 2012,

DESCRIPTION OF GROUP (PERFORMANCE, COSTUMES, MUSIC, PROPS)
- Performing group: 8 Shaolin Kung Fu Monks, 37 students of Shaolin Temple USA aged 8-70.
- Performance: Shaolin Kung Fu (traditional Shaolin Fist forms including animal forms such as the dragon, tiger, monkey, eagle, praying mantis, etc. featuring the Shaolin Snake Fist, Shaolin traditional weapons such as broadsword and shield, drunken sword, 3-sectioned staff, crescent spade, 9-sectioned whip chain, etc. and Shaolin Wellness exercises.)
- Costumes: The monks will be in traditional monk attire; the students will wear the Shaolin Temple USA's traditional Luohan uniform.
- Music: Pre-recorded kung fu and traditional Chinese music played on portable CD player.
- Props: Traditional Chinese martial arts weapons such as spears, swords, staffs, broadswords, whips; colorful banners and flags
WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO IN THE 2013 CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE?

The procession will stop at designated intervals and perform spectacular Shaolin Kung Fu to pre-recorded music:
- Shaolin Animal forms featuring the “Shaolin Dragon Fist”
- Shaolin Wellness exercies - from the 1,500-year old healing system for body and mind including the Shaolin Classics Yijinjing (Change of Sinews) and Xisuijing (Bone Marrow Cleansing).
- The famous 18 traditional Shaolin weapons such as spears, swords, staffs, crescent spades, whips, hooks, dadao, etc.
- Dynamic Shaolin style kicks and jumps, breathtaking sparring sets and spectacular flag routine
STORY OF YOUR SCHOOL OR GROUP
Founded in 2007 as a California nonprofit corporation, Shaolin Temple USA is the first official North American branch of the world famous Songshan Shaolin Temple in Henan Province of China, with the mission to share the 1,500-year old Shaolin cultural heritage with the American people through performances, workshops and Shaolin Kung Fu classes. Under the leadership of Master Shi Yanran, 34th generation Shaolin Kung Fu monk, Shaolin Temple USA currently operates 3 Shaolin Temple Culture Centers in San Francisco, Fremont, CA and Herndon, VA with over over 1,000 multi-ethnic students aged 4 to 80. Shaolin Temple USA also offers Shaolin Kung Fu classes at Stanford University School of Medicine. The monks at Shaolin Temple USA are seasoned Shaolin Kung Fu performers who have toured over 40 countries in theatrical productions of Shaolin Kung Fu, as well as local cultural events such as the kickoff for the Shanghai Exhibit at the Asian Art Museum in 2010, sports events such as the as well as the Stanford University Men’s & Women’s Basketball games in 2010 & 2011, collaboration with renowned arts groups such as Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet of San Francisco and Firebird Youth Chinese Orchestra of San Jose. Students of Shaolin Temple USA have performed Shaolin Kung Fu in the 2009 Shaolin Temple Day Celebration at SF Union Square and San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, as well as in many community events. Shaolin Temple USA was featured on National Geographic AMAZING in June 2010. Master Shi Yanran was named Martial Artist of the Year by the 12th World Congress on Qigong and was featured on the cover of Kung Fu Magazine’s May-June 2012 issue. Shaolin Temple USA participated in the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade for the first time in Febuary 2010. Shaolin Temple USA’s parade team was awarded 2nd place in the 2011 parade’s community organizations category, and 1st place in the 2012 Special Units category.

China Songshan Shaolin Temple
Located in Henan Province of central Chinathe cradle of Chinese civilization
Build in 495 AD by the Wei Dynasty Emperor Wendi to house an Indian Buddhist high monk, it is the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu. Historically, Songshan Shaolin Temple is famous not only for Chan Buddhism and Kung Fu, but also for medicine and art (calligraphy, poetry and painting, etc.). Today, Shaolin Temple remains an epicenter of Chan Buddhist studies, Shaolin Kung Fu, Chinese culture and traditions.

Chan (Zen) Buddhism
Originated from India over 2,500 years ago, Buddhism in China was integrated with the teachings of Confucianism and Taoism as well as Chinese customs to become Chan Buddhism that was deeply ingrained in traditional Chinese culture. Chinese Chan Buddhism has spread all over the world during the past 15 centuries. Today, Chan Buddhism is the largest Buddhist sect in the world with over 200 million practitioners around the globe.
Shaolin Kung Fu and Shaolin Kung Fu Chan
There is a saying that “All martial arts under heaven originated from Shaolin.” With a history of 1,500 years, Shaolin Kung Fu is the largest and most influential martial arts system in the world. Shaolin Kung Fu emphasizes the “Union of Chan and Kung Fu,” which contributes to the harmony of body and mind. Practicing Shaolin Kung Fu builds physical health and cultivate the spirit. Millions of people around the world learn and train in Shaolin Kung Fu everyday for physical fitness, discipline, self defense and cultural enrichment.
Shaolin Temple USA
Shaolin Temple USA is is an official cultural branch of China Songshan Shaolin Temple with the mission to share the rich cultural heritage of Shaolin culture with the American people through performances, workshops and classes. The first Shaolin Temple Culture Center opened in July 2007 in Fremont, CA, the second Center located in San Francisco was officially opened by the Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin of China Songshan Shaolin Temple on March 19, 2009. A third Center opened in Herndon, Virginia in July 2010.
Classes at Stanford University
Shaolin Temple USA began offering weekly Shaolin Kung Fu classes at Stanford University’s School of Medicine in January 2011 to faculty and staff. The class was featured on Stanford University’s official online newpaper Stanford Reporter on February 28, 2012 with interviews, photos and videos that were widely circulated, translated and broadcast worldwide, with many more original interviews and coverage by news services and newspapers in China.

Shaolin Temple Day, March 21
On March 21, 2009, Shaolin Temple USA jointly hosted the tremendously successful “China Songshan Shaolin Temple Day” celebration at Union Square, SF with Songshan Shaolin Temple and California State Senator Dr. Leland Yee during a 6-day event that included a spectacular performance of Shaolin Kung Fu at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts on March 22, and a full day of celebration at the State capitol in Sacramento. March 21 was proclaimed “Shaolin Temple Day” by the California State Senate in 2004 and again in 2009. Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin of Songshan Shaolin Temple and delegation visited California for the Shaolin Day festivities on both occasions. Shaolin Temple Day will again be celebrated in 2013 as an annual event produced by Shaolin Temle USA.
Shaolin Temple USA celebrates its 5th anniversary in 2012 with a series of events including a Joint Performance of Shaolin Warrior Monks and students on December 29 at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts Theatre.
