received their Belt Rank Certificates and new belts for Shaolin Kung Fu Black Belt 1st Duan (Degree) at their graduation ceremony after passing the form performance final examination earlier in the afternoon. The examination was scored by Chief Examiner Master Yanran and Examiners Shifus Hengwu, Hengyuan, Hengxiu, Hengti and Hengzhen. Ms. Jade Wu, representng California Assemblymember and Assembly Budget Committee Chair Phil Ting, presented Certificates of Recognition to the graduates.

gathered under one roof for a friendship contest of Kung Fu skills and to learn from each other.


Group event Champion—the Fremont School Team
put on a creative and spectacular program garnering high scores from the judges and rave applauses from the audience.


The San Francisco School Team won 2nd place in the group event.

Monocle is a London-based news, business, culture and design publication, available online and in large bookstores that carry international magazines. 

Justin Bergman, a correspondent of Monocle stationed in Shanghai interviewed our Executive Director Master Yanran (via telephone) in October, for an article about Shaolin Temple’s international outreach and overseas cultural centers. 

According to Mr. Bergman, he has chosen to feature Shaolin Temple USA from over 40 Shaolin cultural centers around the world because he finds that our organization is “very active with many interesting projects.”

Photographer Carlos Chavarría came to our Shaolin Culture Center in San Francisco and took many photos of the classes in progress. 10 photos of our Shifus and students have been published in the December 2014/January 2015 issue of Monocle, in Soft Power Survey Report — The Monk’s Tale.

Shaolin Temple USA’s Delegation over 100 strong spent an extraordinary and exciting weekend at the Festival. This is the first time that students from our 3 culture centers and Stanford University gathered under the same roof. Students, family and friends immersed themselves in Shaolin Kung Fu Chan culture.

We are proud to announce that our students had upheld the Shaolin Warrior Spirit of Courage and Discipline, Grace and Open-Mindedness throughout the event. 53 students participated in the Shaolin Kung Fu Exam (competition). Not only that they achieved their personal best in the Exam and garnered 93 medals, including 32 gold, 37 silver and 24 bronze, they also exhibited great team spirit and sportsmanship.

Stanford University lined up for the opening ceremony.


Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin of Shaolin Temple led a prayer for world peace.


Shaolin Temple USA students from San Francisco, Fremont CA, Herndon VA and Stanford University excelled
at the Competition, garnering a total of 93 medals.


Awards Ceremony
Venerable Abbot Shi Yongxin personally presented the 1st place awards to all gold medalists.
Team Shaolin Temple USA students aged 7 to 77 were awarded a total of 32 gold medals.


After the Awards Ceremony and Shaolin Kung Fu Evening Gala on 10/12, Shaolin Temple USA students and Sifus gathered for a group photo, joined by some of the Warrior Monks from the Kung Fu performance.

Class description: Shaolin Kung Fu - Sec. 1 Cont. participants only, Sec. 2 Beginner level • Outdoor class

Shaolin Kung Fu is a 1500-year-old comprehensive system for physical and spiritual wellness from the world-famous Shaolin Temple of China, established in 495 AD, the birthplace of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu. The course will be taught by legendary martial monks from the ancient temple who are now stationed at Shaolin Temple USA, under the direction of 34th generation Shaolin Master Shi Yanran, named 2010 Martial Artist of the Year. Curriculum includes traditional Shaolin fist and weapons forms, Shaolin wellness exercises (qigong) and Chan (Zen) meditation. Participants will achieve harmony of body and mind through a well-balanced program, appropriate for active people of all ages who seek to create better health and well-being, train for self-defense, and improve strength and flexibility. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. Continuing participants will work with one Master to further their practice, while beginners or those wanting to review the movements at a slower pace will work with another Master. Continuing participants sign up for section 1. Beginners sign-up for section 2.

Hello from Shaolin Temple

Shaolin Temple USA Executive Director Master Shi Yanran led a group of students through a unique journey in Buddhist traditions and Shaolin Kung Fu at Songshan Shaolin Temple late June, 2011. The groups also took up the challenge of scaling the heights to Bodhidharma Cave and Sanhuang Camp on the majestic Songshan, or Zhongyue, the “Middle Mountain” located at the center among China’s five famous sacred mountains. The group paid homage to the Venerable Shaolin Abbot Shi Yongxin, joined the monks at their daily early morning sutra recitation session, dined with them at their vegetarian breakfast and lunch. Kung Fu lessons took place at Shaolin Temple and in the mountain where Shaolin warrior monks train. The journey’s experience was heightened by the enchanting Chan Music Shaolin Grand Ceremony with natural Songshan scenery as backdrop.

will be attending the Awards Ceremony. For this reason, there will be no

Shaolin Temple USA teaches a weekly Shaolin Kung Fu lesson to Stanford faculty and staff starting January 14, 2011, every Friday at 11:30 am. The class is offered under Stanford University School of Medicine's Health Improvement Program (HIP).
By popular demand, the course will return for a second quarter from 4/1/2011 to 6/10/2011 with 2 mid-day classes on Fridays at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm.
